Crossing borders through music
Mandala Beats vibrantly documents the personal journey of Israeli reggae-funk bassist and producer Yossi Fine, known as the Jimi Hendrix of bass guitar. Fine has recorded and produced music with renowned artists around the world, including Lou Reed, Brian Eno and the late David Bowie. Upon discovery of his own Indian heritage, Fine departs on a journey of rediscovery, setting out for India to explore new sounds and collaborate with local musicians. A series of chance encounters culminate in a stunning collaboration between friends and musicians on the banks of the Ganges River in the city of Rishikesh. A poetic and momentous performance, it echoes the film’s deepest sentiments of music’s extraordinary ability to break barriers and unite people from all walks of life.
Expertly crafted by Montreal-based documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and photographer Rebekah Reiko, Mandala Beats explores the intersection of music, culture and identity. Reiko holds an MFA in Documentary Media from Ryerson University and has made films in India, Israel, Canada, Senegal and Germany.
